The story
In 1998 the watchmaker Swatch proposed abolishing time zones for the internet age: a day of 1000 'beats' counted from midnight Biel Mean Time (UTC+1), named after its Swiss hometown. @500 is the same instant everywhere on Earth.

Fun fact
Swatch sold beat watches and even planned a satellite, released from the Mir space station, to broadcast beats. The dream died; the math survived.
